Typically, I'm not one to plug services, but this one was just too cool. I came across it in a slashdot article:

The gist is, you use their little cad application to design whatever artifact you need and they ship you a finished piece. I mention this, therefore, specifically because a lack of a competent or reasonable machineshop is often a hinderance to proof of concept pieces.
